The following is a
chronology of some main events in Lebanon
since the assassination in February of Rafik al-Hariri, a former prime minister.
Feb. 14, 2005 - Hariri and 20 others are killed by
truck bomb in Beirut.
Feb. 16 - At least 150,000 Lebanese turn Hariri's funeral into outpouring of anger against
Syria.
Feb. 28 - Prime Minister Omar Karami resigns amid anti-Syrian protests.
March 2 - Opposition demands withdrawal of Syrian troops.
March 5 - President Bashar al-Assad tells the Syrian parliament that troops will start
phased pullout from Lebanon.
March 6 - Hizbollah chief Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah says his fighters will not disarm as
Lebanon needs them to deter Israel.
March 7 - Assad and Lebanese President Emile Lahoud, meeting in Damascus, say they respect
all Security Council resolutions, including one demanding that foreign forces quit
Lebanon.
March 8 - Lebanese flood central Beirut for big pro-Syrian rally organized by Hizbollah.
Syrian troops begin redeploying.
March 10 - Lahoud reappoints Karami to form government.
March 14 - Anti-Syrian protesters stage huge demonstration, Lebanon's biggest since
Hariri's killing.
March 16 - Syrian intelligence agents vacate Beirut HQ.
March 19 - Bomb in Christian suburb of Beirut wounds 11 people.
April 13 - Karami resigns again after failing to form cabinet to supervise elections.
April 15 - Lahoud appoints moderate Syrian ally Najib Mikati as prime minister-designate.
April 19 - Najib Mikati forms new government.
April 25 - Pro-Syrian security chief Jamil al-Sayyed resigns.
April 26 - Last Syrian soldiers leave Lebanon.
May 7 - Michel Aoun, Maronite Christian and staunch foe of Syria, returns to hero's
welcome after 14 years in exile.
May 29 - Parliamentary elections take place in Beirut in first of staggered regional polls
on four successive Sundays. The candidate list led by Saad al-Hariri, son of assassinated
former prime minister, wins all 19 seats in Beirut.
June 2 - Samir Kassir, a prominent anti-Syrian journalist is killed when a bomb destroys
his car in Beirut.
June 19 - The anti-Syrian alliance led by Hariri wins 72 seats in the 128-member assembly
at the end of elections.
June 21 - Anti-Syrian politician George Hawi, a former leader of the Lebanese Communist
Party, is killed in a blast in the Wata Musaitbi neighborhood of Beirut.
June 28 - Parliament re-elects pro-Syrian Nabih Berri as speaker for a fourth successive
term.
June 30 - Lebanese president Emile Lahoud names Fouad Siniora, the anti-Syrian former
finance minister, as prime minister-designate.
July 12 - A car bomb hit the motorcade of Murr Tuesday, slightly wounding him and killing at least one other person, officials said.
July 17 - Relations appear to have deteriorated sharply in past weeks with Syrian officials holding up hundreds of trucks leaving Lebanon into Syria bound for other Arab countries.
July 18 - amnesty motion calling for the release of Geagea who led the powerful Christian Lebanese Forces militia during the 1975-90 civil war
July 19 - The new 24-seat government is headed by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, who served as finance minister in Mr. Hariri's governments. It took a month to assemble a cabinet lineup that was acceptable to the parliament.
July 21 - Bush Administration Boycotts Hizbullah's Minister in Seniora's Cabinet
July 22 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made a surprise visit to volatile Lebanon on Friday to encourage a new democratic government

July 26 - Christian Warlord released, after 11 years, the balding Geagea with slightly graying hair and mustache appeared thin but spoke with a strong, clear voice.
August 01 - Fahd bin Abdel-Aziz, 82, the fifth Saudi Arabian king, was pronounced dead in an official statement on state television. His reign lasted 23 years and was distinguished by vast modernization projects, balanced against a background of tribal tradition and orthodox Islam.
August 02 - Government departments and banks were closed across Lebanon in mourning for King Fahd Tuesday as President Lahoud, Speaker Berri and Premier Seniora flew to the Saudi capital of Riyadh to attend the fallen monarch's funeral.
August 17 - Hariri was murdered by a truck-bomb
above the ground and probably a simultaneous one-ton bomb detonated underground. The 'how'
has been resolved, but the 'who' still has to be determined to pinpoint who had ordered
the assassination
August 20 - Finance Minister Jihad Azour says the government is boosting foreign currency
reserves to cope with a possible incrimination of Lebanese officials by the U.N. Mission
of Inquiry into ex-Premier Hariri's assassination.
August 22 - A powerful explosion late Monday rocked a shopping center and hotel in the Zalka.
August 30 - Nine Syrian-Linked Suspects Rounded Up for International Interrogation into Hariri's Assassination
September 16 - Powerful Bomb Devastates Densely Populated Beirut Neighborhood, 1 killed, 25 Injured.
September 25 - The officials said May Chidiac, who works for the private Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, was inside her car when the bomb exploded on Sunday in Jounieh,.

November 22 - 2005 - For the first time in three decades Lebanon has marked Independence Day without the presence of Syrian troops, but events were shadowed by deadly clashes between Israel and Hezbollah on its southern border.
December 12 - 2005 - Gebran Tueni, a fiery critic of Syria, was assassinated in a car-bomb explosion in Mkalles, east of Beirut Monday. He was 48. Tueni was An Nahar's general manager and Beirut legislator.
