Health
Can living cells commit suicide?
Living cells can, and do, commit suicide.
The process, called apoptosis
(from a Greek word that describes leaves dropping from trees)
can be triggered by events within a cell or by a stimulus delivered from outside.
During development, cells throughout the body are programmed to die. If not for apoptosis,
we would all be born with webbed fingers and toes, like people with a genetic defect in
which those cells between the fingers and toes do not die off. Billions of unused
nerve cells also die as part of normal development, leaving behind those nerve cells that
perform useful functions.
Once we are born, apoptosis serves another important role. If a cell becomes
infected with a virus, immune cells can often detect differences in its surface and
deliver suicide instructions. Cancer is partly a result of mutated cells that ignore
suicide instructions from the immune system.
